From doing a quick search on Google and Yelp, I noticed that
there seemed to be a vacuum around the area. There are Nutritionists in
Oakland; however they are mostly located in the more affluent neighborhoods.
Majority of what came up for nutrition came in the form of stores which sell
vitamins.
During our visit, Kelsey and I came across a store which
sold holistic vitamins, La Fuente de la Salud. Unfortunately, it was closed. We came across another
store which appeared to be another vitamin/drugstore. Milagros de Mexico, it was
much bigger and seemed to have a lot of customers. We couldn’t help but notice
an advertisement posted in the window.
It was written completely in Spanish but featured a white, male doctor
posing with a thumb up. Later, we found out not only was this a
vitamin/drugstore but also an Access Health clinic.
As we continued to walk down International Blvd, we came
across Terra Nova Medical Group which had a full waiting room. At this place,
one doesn’t need to have insurance. In fact, even if you had insurance they
wouldn’t accept it and seeing the doctor was on a first come first serve basis.
This was an affordable option to healthcare at $60 per visit no matter what. Although we didn’t find any clinics dedicated to nutrition,
we found a few clinics that served affordable health care to the Fruitvale
community.
